AA in Accounting
The AA in Accounting has become one of the most popular online degrees due to the unending need for responsible money managers in every business, and the need for flexible continuing education options. Accounting is about making financial decisions., including forecasts, allocations, and budgets – the use of money to further an organization's goals. Every organization needs accountants in one form or another, and with an AA in Accounting, you can step into that world – or almost any other. If you don't believe it, just look at some who have.
Who's Who in Accounting
Bob Newhart worked as an accountant and Tiger Woods and John Grisham both studied accounting prior to beginning their more famous careers. Phil Knight and Arthur Blank both used their accounting expertise to start companies you might have heard of - Nike and Home Depot. Jack Greenberg is the Chairman of the Board for Western Union Corporation and former CEO and Chairman of the Board for MacDonald's Corporation. He is also a former working accountant whose first major business responsibility was as a partner in a major accounting firm.
Accounting Opens Doors
With an AA in Accounting you can get your foot in the door in many fields. Banking, bookkeeping, administrative assistant, small business manager and many other positions are open to you. Not to mention that many people use the associates as a stepping stone to an advanced degree, with all that entails. There is probably no other field that opens up as many opportunities as accounting.
World Class Firms
Of course, you can also work directly in accounting if you prefer. Such accounting firms as Arthur Andersen, Deloitte & Touche, Ernst & Young, KPMG and PW Coopers are among the largest, most respected and best paying companies in the world. Even local accounting firms often pay very well. According to Bryant and Stratton, their online accounting degree will prepare students for entry level accounting jobs in that starting range of $35,000-$52,000 a year.
Start with an AA Degree
An AA is an associate's degree, which is typically about sixty semester hours, or two years for a student carrying a normal full-time class load. Associates degrees in accounting are offered by many online schools and can be expensive, but many community colleges offer such degrees for less than ten thousand dollars. Online colleges offering this degree include Bryant & Stratton, Rasmussen College, and the University of Phoenix.
Of course, costs and requirements do vary. At Rasmussen College you can expect to take 93 credit hours to obtain your associate's. If you go full time that will be $325 per credit hour or $30,225. Part time students will pay $350 per credit hour or a total of $32,550. This includes the cost of both books and needed software for the courses.
Accounting Degree Prerequisites
Entering an associate's program in accounting will normally require that you have at least a high school diploma or equivalent. You will spend about half your time studying your core accountancy courses, the other half in general education courses.
A student will study such subjects as Cost Accounting, which teaches you to keep the books to the standards necessary for business and government. Principles of Management will help you understand how to organize and operate a business. Financial Management helps the student understand how to use the money at their disposal to protect and grow their business. Similar courses in other areas help the student become rounded and knowledgeable in all aspects of business.
An Online Degree Rocks!
All the tools of the online world are at the disposal of the student seeking an online AA in Accounting - online lectures, streaming video, MP3, email, forums and chat rooms. Best of all, you get to do it all on your own schedule.
